Project: MOON
Project: MOON was the springboard for my current project, the 'Paper Moon' collection. An object in much the same fashion as a pocket watch, MOON was deisgned to allow the wearer to see the night sky in the middle of the day. Using light and darkness to encapsulate a snap shot of a distant cosmos, I set a Sapphire, Amethyst, Moonstone, Emerald and Ruby to represent the sometimes faintly colourful twinkle of planets we see on clear nights. Externally, I used NASA images to photo etch the lunar surface onto the casing. MOON was designed to be a secretive curiosity and as a comfort for those needing just a moment of the night skies magical reassurance in their pocket. |
Project: Crystaline
'Crystaline' was a project to challenge the perception of 'precious' materials. Using polymer clay with gold leaf inclusions, I cut away into the clay to reveal precious speckles within. This play of a precious metal hidden within a common day-to-day material was a comment on our historical obsession with perceived 'precious' materials, and how often our emotional attachment to an object elevates it's worth far beyond that of monetary value. |
Project: Marshmallow
'Marshmallow' took a deeper look into what exactly triggers childhood nostalgia. Using the colours and flexible, squeezable properties of sweets and marshmallows, I was able to create a fun malleable object that not only reminded individuals of sweets, but also induced a sense of playfulness reflective of childhood. I used dyed silicone and polyurethane foam for this project, the only metal used was a thin aluminium rod through the centre to hold the desired shape. I also experimented with fused glass for this project and whilst visually the impact was similar, the material properties didn't fit with the desired effect. |
